Motivation...

Sometimes, a few well-written words is all it takes to make me want to get out there and exercise or start fishing through my cupboards and throwing out all the crappy empty-calorie foods...

Personal trainer Sonia Ulrich has written 10 fitness tips that make me want to do just that. Go read them in full at her vox blog: Fit Tips that are Actually Useful and Not Lame. Really!

Here's the recap:
1. If it feels good, do it!
2. If it doesn't feel good, don't do it!
3. Find a fitness activity and set that as your goal.
4. Everything counts.
5. Don't beat yourself up -- literally or figuratively.
6. The deleted 11th commandment: Ladies, thou shalt not "bulk up."
7. Strength training to lose weight? You bet your sweet ass!
8. Turn yourself into Maria Von Trapp, baby!
9. What should you eat? Food! Duh!!
10. You don't have to change, just be aware.

The recap is more for my reference; do yourself a favour and read them in full.

Inch by Inch...

Wow. I actually measured my waist and hips today. I've become desensitized to my weight, the number no longer seems outrageous, but it's been years and years since I knew my real waist size... and I was startled by the number. I'll start tracking the measurements at SparkPeople.com, along with everything else I'm tracking; it may be a better motivator than my weight.

New plan.

OK. I need to get back in line with my eating habits... for starters, I have decided to "stop-stuffing-my-face-with-crap-all-day" and am now on Day 2 of that plan.

Day 1 was an unmitigated failure. I was doing OK (yes, I did eat some Hersheys kissables, but I avoided all the cake and cookies around here for a coworker's birthday)... but then after dinner, kiddo didn't finish her food, so I did. Then I stayed on the "can't let good food go to waste" escalator to fatness and finished off pretty much two servings of leftover flapper pie in the fridge that was about to be tossed. Then I felt bad, so (naturally) I ate chocolate. Then I got angry with myself and was grumpy for the rest of the night.

I am also going to make a real effort to exercise every day. I am going to try to track it, too, though I am not sure how. Yesterday and today I walked with a coworker, and the plan is to do that tomorrow, too. The bonus of the workday walks is that I give up a coffee break to do them, which is one fewer opportunity to stuff crap in my face.
